How to replace a toilet flange

Replacing a toilet flange is essential when it is broken, corroded, or causing leaks. Here's a step-by-step guide to replace a toilet flange properly:

1. Gather Tools and Materials

  • New toilet flange (ensure compatibility with your drain pipe)

  • Wax ring or rubber gasket (to reseal the toilet)

  • Screwdriver

  • Adjustable wrench or socket wrench

  • Pry bar or putty knife

  • Drill (if needed for screws)

  • Silicone caulk (optional)

  • Gloves and safety goggles

2. Turn Off the Water Supply

  1. Locate the shut-off valve near the toilet and turn it clockwise to close.

  2. Flush the toilet to drain water from the tank and bowl.

  3. Use a sponge or wet/dry vacuum to remove any remaining water.

3. Remove the Toilet

  1. Disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the toilet tank.

  2. Unscrew the nuts from the bolts securing the toilet to the floor.

  3. Carefully lift the toilet straight up and place it on a towel or cardboard to avoid damage.

4. Remove the Old Flange

  1. Inspect the flange:

    • Check for cracks, corrosion, or damage to determine replacement is necessary.

  2. Remove the old flange:

    • Unscrew or pry it up with a screwdriver or pry bar.

    • If it’s glued to the drain pipe, carefully cut it out with a reciprocating saw.

  3. Clean the area:

    • Scrape away the old wax ring and any debris around the drainpipe and flange area.

5. Install the New Flange

  1. Fit the new flange:

    • Place the new flange into the drainpipe, ensuring it sits flush with the floor.

    • For PVC flanges, use PVC cement to secure it if required.

  2. Secure the flange:

    • Screw the flange to the floor using the provided holes. If the floor is uneven, use flange spacers to level it.

  3. Insert closet bolts:

    • Place the new closet bolts into the slots on the flange, ensuring they are upright and evenly spaced.

6. Prepare for Reinstallation

  1. Place a new wax ring or rubber gasket on top of the flange.

  2. Ensure the ring is centered over the flange opening.

7. Reinstall the Toilet

  1. Carefully lower the toilet onto the flange, aligning the bolt holes in the toilet base with the bolts on the flange.

  2. Press down firmly to compress the wax ring and create a watertight seal.

  3. Tighten the nuts onto the bolts evenly, alternating sides to ensure the toilet sits level. Do not overtighten.

8. Reconnect the Water Supply

  1. Attach the water supply line to the toilet tank.

  2. Turn on the shut-off valve and let the tank fill.

  3. Flush the toilet to test for proper operation and leaks.

9. Final Steps

  • If desired, apply a bead of silicone caulk around the toilet base for a finished look.

  • Ensure all connections are secure and the toilet is stable.

Tips

  • Inspect the subfloor: Check for damage around the flange. Repair or reinforce the floor if needed.

  • Choose the right flange: Flanges come in various types (PVC, ABS, stainless steel). Match it to your drainpipe material.

  • Use a spacer if needed: If your floor has been raised (e.g., new tile), use a flange extender to ensure a proper seal.
