Replace a toilet - easy steps

Changing a toilet involves removing the old one, preparing the area, and installing the new toilet securely. Here's a step-by-step guide:

1. Gather Tools and Materials

  • Adjustable wrench

  • Screwdriver

  • Plumber’s putty or silicone caulk (optional)

  • Wax ring or rubber gasket (typically included with the new toilet)

  • Towels, sponge, or a wet/dry vacuum

  • Bucket and rags

  • New toilet with bolts and tank hardware

2. Turn Off the Water Supply

  1. Locate the shut-off valve behind or near the toilet and turn it clockwise to close.

  2. Flush the toilet to drain as much water as possible from the tank and bowl.

  3. Use a sponge or wet/dry vacuum to remove remaining water.

3. Disconnect the Water Supply Line

  • Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the water supply line from the toilet tank.

  • Place a bucket underneath to catch any residual water.

4. Remove the Old Toilet

  1. Unscrew the bolts:

    • Pry off the bolt caps at the base of the toilet and unscrew the nuts holding the toilet in place.

  2. Remove the toilet:

    • Rock the toilet gently to break the seal of the wax ring, then lift it off the flange.

    • Place the toilet on an old towel or cardboard to prevent mess.

  3. Remove the wax ring:

    • Scrape off the old wax ring from the flange using a putty knife.

  4. Inspect the flange:

    • Check for cracks or damage. Replace if necessary.

5. Prepare for Installation

  1. Install new bolts:

    • Insert the new closet bolts into the flange.

  2. Place the new wax ring:

    • Position the wax ring or rubber gasket onto the bottom of the new toilet bowl or directly onto the flange.

6. Install the New Toilet

  1. Position the toilet:

    • Carefully lower the toilet bowl onto the flange, aligning the bolts with the holes in the base.

    • Press down firmly to compress the wax ring and create a seal.

  2. Secure the toilet:

    • Tighten the nuts onto the bolts evenly to avoid cracking the porcelain. Do not overtighten.

    • Snap on the bolt caps for a clean finish.

7. Install the Tank (If Separate)

  1. Attach the tank to the bowl using the provided bolts and gasket.

  2. Tighten the bolts evenly to ensure a secure and level fit. Avoid overtightening to prevent cracking.

8. Reconnect the Water Supply

  1. Attach the water supply line to the tank and tighten with a wrench.

  2. Turn on the shut-off valve and let the tank fill.

  3. Check for leaks around the supply line, tank bolts, and base.

9. Test the Toilet

  • Flush the toilet to ensure it works properly and check for leaks.

  • If there’s a leak, ensure bolts are tightened evenly and the wax ring is sealed correctly.

10. Seal the Base (Optional)

  • Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the base of the toilet for a finished look and added stability.

Tips

  • Wax ring placement: Ensure the wax ring is positioned properly to avoid leaks.

  • Check flange height: If the flange is too low, consider using a flange extender.

  • Dispose of the old toilet properly: Contact your local waste management for disposal guidelines.
